Session 1: Tomb of the Serpent King

The Short Version

The party descended into a long-forgotten tomb beneath a sinkhole that has been vomiting snakes into the nearby town of Marrin’s Hold. In exchange for a thorough report, the townsfolk have offered them sanctuary. They got further than expected. They also got flattened by a door.

What Went Down

The tomb opens into a long corridor flanked by four chambers, each housing a stone coffin. The first two looked mundane and were left alone. The second pair were more interesting.

The first revealed a clay statue of a sly, thin snake-man. The party stripped an old amulet from it, then Sloggark, in a moment of inspired curiosity, attempted to drill through the clay with a dagger point to see what was inside. The clay crumbled, releasing a hideous gas. He reacted fast enough to escape unharmed. Just.

The second coffin held another clay statue, this one dressed as a sorcerer and wearing a silver ring. Attempts to remove the ring cracked the statue. Gas again. This time Kanya was too slow, taking a lungful and suffering for it.

Further down the corridor, a pair of heavy wooden doors were barred by a thick stone block hung on iron pegs. Suspicious but undeterred, the party investigated before attempting to lift the bar but investigation only goes so far. As the bar rose, so did the pegs, and a massive stone hammer swung down and destroyed the doors entirely. Kanya dodged clear. Sloggark did not, and was dropped to 0hp. His companions dragged him back from the brink and the party pressed on.

The chamber beyond was large and clearly ceremonial, walls carved with scenes of snake-men in worship, three decorated coffins arranged within. The party carefully opened the first two and found snake-man skeletons within, undisturbed. Before opening the third, Sloggark began casting. The magical interference was enough to wake the dead.

Both skeletons rose and attacked. Sloggark, undeterred, completed his Turn Undead, and it was devastating. All three skeletons, including the one still in the unopened coffin, fled in terror for five full turns. The party seized the opening, whittling them down before the effect wore off and finishing the last one cleanly.

After looting the coffins for weapons and shields, the party called it a night.
